Island Music
by Michael Tilson Thomas
and other extravagant adventures

Stansbury Theatre

Jack Van Geem, marimba
Nancy Zeltsman, marimba
& stars of ZMF 2014

Michael Tilson Thomas is the Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony (among many other illustrious achievements). His phenomenal work Island Music, for 6 players, is an unforgettable musical adventure.

A major 35-minute work. The island in question is Bali, and one of the currents
that flows into the music is gamelon (both its sounds and the development of its rhythmic structures). But the piece also reflects the origins of the [marimba, and] the melting pot of American popular music of the '30s. It's a doozy, beginning in mystery and closing in riotous celebration---simply sensational."

George Hamilton Green, Christos Rafalides, Curet Alfonso
