Theodor Milkov, a Greek percussionist in the State Orchestra of Athens (and graduate of CvA), is widely recognized for his breathtaking artistry on marimba, especially Scarlatti adaptations.
Ivana Bilic, ZMF Faculty
Ivana Bilic, Principal Timpanist of the Croatian Radio Symphony Orchestra and two-time recipient of the Croatian “Porin” Award for best classical performance for her marimba recordings, will be joined by the Porin String Quartet from Croatia featuring music by Croatians Kuljeric and Palanovic, alongside works by Sammut, Levitan and Aguirre.

Tatiana Koleva, ZMF Faculty and Special Guest Rutger van Otterloo, saxophones
Tatiana Koleva, a Bulgarian-born marimbist, was named “Musician of the Year” for 2007 by the National Radio and the audience of Bulgaria. She now lives and works in the Netherlands where she frequently inspires new compositions for marimba using her “marimba extended:” formula: marimba augmented by other percussion instruments, sound tracks and her voice. Her ZMF recital will include performances with jazz saxophonist Rutger van Otterloo including Louis Andriessen’s Hout; works by Klatzow, Kyriakides and Ellington; and traditional Bulgarian music.

Julie Spencer, ZMF Faculty
Julie Spencer, an American who currently lives in Bingen, Germany, is an internationally renowned virtuoso on her main instrument, the marimba. She has appeared in concerts throughout Europe, North America, and Japan. In 2003, she was named one of the world’s 20 best young jazz vibraphonists by Jazziz magazine. Her ZMF concert will feature her own compositions, including a duo work with guest marimbist Nancy Zeltsman.

8:00 pm / TheaterzaalConservatorium van Amsterdam & Hochschule für Musik Detmold Percussion Ensembles: Top student soloists and ensembles from both conservatories will perform works for mallet ensemble (Ravel, Séjourné); by Dutch composers (de Leeuw, Vleggaar); and by Japanese composer Maki Ishii.

This will be a fun demonstration/recital offering background information about the marimba. Perfect for children and families! Performing and teaching will be two dynamic duos (CvA graduates):
Duo Sax & Stix (saxophonist Eva van Grinsven and percussionist Ramon Lormans) & Tchiki Duo (percussionists Jacques Hostettler and Nicolas Suter).
Duo Sax & Stix, First Prize winners at the Dutch National Chamber Music Competition, perform adaptations as well as music composer specifically for them. Tchiki Duo performs their own works along with those of the masterswith emotion, originality and virtuosity.

Nancy Zeltsman, ZMF Faculty and Special Guest Larry Passin, clarinet
Nancy Zeltsman, ZMF’s Artistic Director, will present an evening of solo and duo music. Formerly a member the duo Marimolin for many years, this summer Nancy is connecting with long-time friend with Larry Passin who has been Principal Clarinet of the Barcelona Symphony for 20 years. Music by Louis Andriessen, Carla Bley, Olivier Messiaen, Shawn Michalek, Errollyn Wallen, Barbara White and more.

Jack Van Geem, ZMF Faculty
Jack van Geem has been Principal Percussionist of the San Francisco Symphony for 30 years. He has been on faculty at nearly every ZMF. This year’s recital program, which he calls “Variations,” will include works of Bach, Piazzolla and Darren Jones, as well as Alejandro Viñao’s landmark compositions Khan Variations and Arabesco Infinito. Van Geem’s long-awaited solo marimba CD featuring South American composers will be released!

PercaDu, Adi Morag & Tomer Yariv, ZMF Faculty
PercaDu, Adi Morag and Tomer Yariv from Israel, is a world class percussion duo celebrated for their virtuoso, energetic and intense playing. During 2009, they were featured soloists with the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. They have received numerous prizes including “Best Chamber Music Ensemble” at the Aviv Music Competition.
