Theodor Milkov

Theodor Milkov is currently a percussionist with the State Orchestra of Athens-Greece. At the age of 12, he received first prize at “Classica Nova,” an International Competition for young musicians in Hannover, Germany. At 15, Theodor represented Greece at the “Eurovision” competition in Berlin and became the first Greek finalist in the 25-year history of this event.

In the same year, Theodor began to perform regularly as a soloist. He performed the Greek premiere of Ney Rosauro’s Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra with the Hellas Orchestra of Patra-Greece, conducted by S. Sondeckis. Following this, Milkov performed with Camerata Orchestra of Athens, conducted by A. Myrat; and Berliner Rundfunk, conducted by M. Janowski. He has performed solo and chamber music in Greece, Holland, Germany, France, Belgium and Russia. Presenters have included “Musical Olympus”-St.Petersburg, “Suite-Festival”-Muziekgebouw Amsterdam; and the German Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society. Milkov has also been fortunate to collaborate with composers/conductors Gunther Schuller and Theodore Antoniou. Antoniou dedicated one of his pieces to Milkov.

Born to two musicians, Milkov took his first percussion lessons at the age of eight with Vesela Neikova and later studied with Maxim Mankovsky at the Municipal Conservatoire of Patras in Greece. Theodor completed his studies at Detmold Musikhochschule in Germany with Peter Prommel; and Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Nick Woud, Gustavo Gimeno, Peter Prommel, and Jan Pustjens. Between 2004 to 2006, Theodor was a teaching assistant of Peter Prommel at Detmold Musikhochschule. He also studied in Royal Conservatorium Den Haag with Wim Vos, Hans Zanderop, Luk Nagdegaal, and Fedor Teunisse.
