Location, Travel, Housing, Food

ZMF 2010 is co-sponsored by Conservatorium van Amsterdam: the largest and most diverse conservatory in the Netherlands. As ZMF begins on June 25, CvA’s spring/summer semester will be wrapping up—yet they are warmly welcoming ZMF to use many of the spaces throughout their beautiful new facility.

Flight and travel advice

If you are travelling by air to Amsterdam, you will arrive at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS). Once you arrive at Schiphol, we suggest going into Amsterdam via train. Trains run frequently; the trip takes about 17 minutes.

Your destination will be the train station: Amsterdam Central Station. From there, it is only a 5-minute walk to City Hotel Amsterdam, where most ZMF participants will reside. Download walking directions (including how to walk from the City Hotel to CvA).

In early June, we will provide complete details about taking the train from the airport to the center of Amsterdam, including cost. On the arrival days—June 24 and 25, 2010—ZMF representatives will often be available to greet participants at Amsterdam Central Station and assist with getting luggage to City Hotel.

Check-in, check-out, and important dates

  • Participants may arrive and check in on Thursday or Friday, June 24 or 25.
  • If you are staying at City Hotel Amsterdam, you may wish to check in there first.
  • ZMF check-in will take place at CvA on both days. (By June, we will provide directions to a specific room.) It is helpful if you check in between Noon and 5:00 pm on these days; however, we will do our best to accommodate check-in at other times.
  • Everyone should arrive and register for ZMF by 6:00 pm on June 25. The first ZMF event is a concert that night at 8:00 pm at Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
  • Check-out will be in Sunday, July 11, preferably in the morning.

Housing

  • ZMF participants have the option to reside at City Hotel Amsterdam for the duration of the festival. It is only an 11-minute walk from City Hotel to CvA. Walking directions (PDF)
  • By special arrangement, the cost will be $60 (U.S. dollars) per night. These rates include breakfast served at the hotel.
  • All the rooms have single beds with two, three or four beds per room. We are happy to accommodate roommate requests, or will assign rooms.

Note: CvA does not have a dormitory for their students. Generally, housing in Amsterdam is rather tight and difficult to find. There are youth hostels, but the cost isn’t much different, and they are much farther away from the CvA. We regret these housing costs exceed those of past years’ ZMFs (held in the U.S.).

We did a lot of research on this. Considering the market, and that summer is peak travel season, we think City Hotel Amsterdam is an excellent option. Again, it is not required that you stay at there. It’s fine if you wish to make other arrangements.

Food during ZMF

  • See "Housing" section above; breakfast is included at City Hotel Amsterdam.
  • We are trying to make a special arrangement for some lunches and dinners to be available at CvA, or neighboring restaurants at reduced costs.
  • As a general idea, our friends in Amsterdam recommend budgeting around 5-10 € for lunch (including beverage), and 6-12 € for dinner, at a minimum.
